The optimum version of Rio 2 is sliced, diced, and buried under a stodgy Meet the Parents send-up. Sporadically, the animated sequel dazzles with splashy Brazilian wild life sambaing to the tunes of Sergio Mendes. Stretched out, they could make a wondrous Latin American Fantasia.Instead, Blue Sky Studios' fluffs it up with kiddie conventions and half-baked humor, making for 100 minutes of doldrums.
Celebrity actors read lines, drama is shrugged into existence, one of the birds gets punched in the face causing him to make a funny sound, dance, dance, kick, turn, dance, dance, kick, turn, problems are overcome, show's over, go home, never think about this movie again. There's nothing wrong with Rio 2. There's nothing right about it either.A few years after succumbing to romance, the world's two remaining blue macaws, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jewel (Anne Hathaway), are a happily hitched couple with three tweeting toddlers under their wings. They've slid into routine thanks to the swank animal rescue pad provided by their owners, Linda and Tulio.(Download Rio 2) But like any freebird dialed back by familial demands, Jewel pines for vacation in the wild. It's not the fanny pack-wearing, GPS-using, pancake-making Blu's idea of a good time, but as his toucan friend Rafael suggests, “Happy wife, happy life!” (because Rafael subscribes to archaic sitcom relationship logic). Feigning the banner of “Fun Dad,” Blu packs up his family and heads to the Amazon jungle.
A series of coincidences lead Blu and Jewel to a secret community of Blue Macaws, including Jewel's father, Eduardo (Andy Garcia). The opposing cultures — Blu's human sympathetic and the tribal Amazonians — slam together like dull flint, forcing director Carlos Saldanha and the four credited writers to brush the original film's character work under the rug and rebuild.Eisenberg's Blue is once again a nebbish Gomer Pyle,(Download Rio 2) Jewel an elegant people person attempting to understand what there is to love about this domesticated oaf. Eduardo's entire role is to drive home a question, “Polly want a cracker?” style: Why can't Jewel kick Blu to the curb and shack up with local heartthrob Roberto (Bruno Mars)? No child has ever confronted this issue. When an 11-minute episode of Adventure Time can weave hysteria and provocative life lessons together without missing a beat, a $90 million Hollywood cartoon should be capable of saying something.
The rest of the characters are around to kill time and complicate Blu's life with broad stroke demands. Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement returns as Nigel, the theatrical sulphur-crested Cockatoo who vows revenge against Blue for crippling his ability to fly.(Download Rio 2) Nigel, a poison dart frog Gabi (Kristen Chenoweth), and a silent anteater named Charlie (tipping the bowler hat to Chaplin) pursue Blue in parallel to the macaw's drama, adding much-needed laughs and throwaway musical numbers.A third plot line involving Linda and Tulio warding off a crew of illegal loggers exists solely for a grand finale battle somewhere between the Battle for Endor and Hitchcock's The Birds. Not as cool as it sounds.Despite talent like Jamie Foxx, Leslie Mann, Tracey Morgan, and the legendary Rita Moreno lending their voices to Rio 2, Eisenberg is the only actor to breathe life into his 3D animated husk.
Stutters, screeching, and a neurotic cadence give Blu deep-seeded problems, even when the script won't address them. The actor reacts, whether it's Jewel confronting his failures or the physical demands of a high-speed Pit of Doom game (the macaw name for football/soccer).Like the choreographed song-and-dance numbers, Saldanha diverts from the straightforward storytelling to give Rio 2 an athletic action set-piece. Eisenberg exerts the same energy, even when draped in computer graphics (Download Rio 2).2011's Rio, following the meeting and mating of a Minnesotan house-pet Spix Macaw named Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) as he learns he's not the last of his species when the plucky, pretty Jewel (Anne Hathaway) turns up in Brazil, made money but few friends; its soundtrack (produced in part by legendary musician Sergio Mendes) was infinitely more catchy than anything in its mild-meets-wild recycled plot, and director Carlos Saldanha clearly had a passion for capturing his homeland that made it beautiful.
Rio 2, on the other hand, is about as soulless and unnecessary a sequel as you can ask for, a prime example of how Hollywood can, and will, create Product-with-a-capital-'P' to shove at kids in the name of easy money. Rio 2 is a movie where a platoon of screenwriters seem to have shaped it into blandness, and where it seems far more thought went into the marketing and tie-ins than the actual movie in front of the numeral, and it desperately shows.Picking up with Blu and Jewel in wedded bliss in Brazil,(Download Rio 2) the plot moves to the Amazon when naturalists and nature-lovers Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) and Linda (Leslie Mann) think they've discovered a lost colony of Blue Spix Macaws; when Blu and Jewel go to the Amzon to find and help the missing Tulio and Linda, they also discover that the lost group of Blue Spix don't want to be found -- and that their leader is Jewel's dad Eduardo (Andy Garcia), keeping the rare birds out of human sight. But an illegal logger -- who also captured Linda and Tulio -- is getting closer and closer ...
You don't have to be a film major to spot all the influences here: Meet the Parents, Fern Gully -- and when Blue and Jewel's music-obsessed friends Nico (Jamie Foxx) and Pedro (will.i.am) come to the forest to find new singers for their Carnival group, there's a hint of The Voice or American Idol, while first-film baddie Nigel (Jemaine Clement) is back for off-the-rack revenge with he help of poisonous and lovelorn frog Gabi (Kristen Chenoweth) and a silent henchman anteater. And Jewel's ex,(Download Rio 2) the silky-smooth Rodrigo (Bruno Mars, wholly wasted) is also in the mix ...And this is what ultimately makes Rio 2 fall apart under its own weight: There's so many supporting characters, new and old, that the film barely bothers to give them a storyline to support. (Blu and Jewel have three kids, each of whom say maybe two lines of dialogue; there are other brief, meaningless drop-ins by other characters, on the chance your kids will confuse activity with action.)
(Download Rio 2) By the time Blu leads his fellow birds in an assault on the illegal loggers -- part Braveheart and part The Birds -- it's not so much that the story comes to a conclusion than the filmmakers seem to shrug and say "Well, that oughta make someone happy."There's a few yuks and joys in Rio 2 -- Clement's plummy, hammy hapless bad guy is pathetic and endearing, while the CGI 3D choreography of the musical sequences with the birds and other animals is pleasant and inventive. Those sequences -- as if Busby Berkley closed the Ark door and said to the assembled twosomes "We have 40 days and 40 nights to make it work, people ..." -- are terrific,(Download Rio 2) but there's so much filler (and so many filler characters) that those becomes less like highlights and more like bright spots for the dimness.Eisenberg brings some nerdy, nervy energy to his part, but Hathaway could be any female voice, and the characters don't so much go from scene to scene as loiter and sing until the closing credits trudge into sight.
Rio had, at the very least, a spark of life to it; Rio 2 is like an old, uncared-for taxidermy model -- dusty and falling apart from lack of care, frozen stiff, and completely dead in the eyes. “Rio 2” is not what I would call Amazon prime, but it’s got enough silly songs and daffy critters to keep the little ones happy.Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a rare blue macaw from Minnesota, reckons,(Download Rio 2) “I’m not the birdliest bird in the flock.” Yeah, we figured. He wears a fanny pack. Also he needs a GPS to find his way from his urban home in Rio de Janeiro to the Amazon rain forest, where he and his mate Jewel (Anne Hathaway) decide to visit their old human pals, naturalists who have discovered more members of the exotic species.“Rio 2,” a sequel to the hugely successful 2011 animated feature, piles up the conflicts without making any of them especially scary (or interesting).
There’s a pompous cockatoo, Nigel (Jemaine Clement) who is bent on revenge after his plot to kidnap Blu failed in the first film; evil loggers who want to clear-cut the refuge of the blue macaws, ruffled feathers between Blu and a new character, Jewel’s disapproving dad (Andy Garcia); and, in a development that seems to have come straight from the marketing department, a soccer game in which Blu finds himself playing a star role. (Brazil is hosting the World Cup this year,(Download Rio 2) and the film is already playing there.) Still, I had to smile when a referee pulls out a canary to use as a yellow card. The movie isn’t in any particular hurry to get where it’s going, which is fine because Blu and Jewel are likable enough, even if they’re upstaged by the nutty romance between the stuffed shirt thespian Nigel and a poison tree frog (Kristin Chenoweth) who can’t touch him lest she kill him. Her love song to him is one of the highlights of the film, whose dazzling colors and lushly imagined scenery give it a chirpy energy.
Much of the film’s DNA is shared with the “Ice Age” franchise: Director Carlos Saldanha directed or co-directed three of those films, which, like this one, is a product of the Blue Sky animation studio. Pixar’s storytellers don’t need to fear anything from the folks at Blue Sky: The loggers, for instance, are such vaguely-defined background figures that they never feel like a serious threat,(Watch Rio 2 Online HQ) and the disapproving father-in-law gag is straight out of a 1960s sitcom. The movie is ever ready to drop everything for some cute slapstick or light goofing around with Blu’s friends. Like the city it’s named after, though, “Rio 2” proudly stands for music, colors and partying. Unlike the city, though, at least the movie won’t leave you with a hangover, a sunburn or a missing wallet.
